Absences
Each semester (Sept-Dec and Jan-May), piano students qualify for two make up lessons. No-shows and late arrivals do not qualify for make up lessons. In the unfortunate circumstance that your teacher needs to miss a scheduled lesson, you will receive a make up lesson in addition to your two, student-based make up lessons.

Group Classes cannot be made up at a later date.

I missed a class!
If you need to miss an ECM class for any reason (illness, weather, travel, etc.), you are welcome to make up that class at another scheduled ECM class. Please contact laurelnolin@gmail.com before attending another class, so that Ms. Laurel can prepare materials and space accordingly. Students who wish to withdraw from an ECM class mid-semester will not receive a refund.
Who attends?
All of our ECM classes are for students and their caregivers. Siblings of different ages are welcome to tag along! Having a range of ages can deeply enrich our learning. If you have two children within the class's age range both regularly attending, tuition is required for both children.
What should I wear?
We move a lot during music class! Wear clothes that you are cool and comfortable in while getting up and down off the floor. Everyone removes their shoes in the classroom (unless an accommodation is needed), so socks are recommended.
Is there any homework?
Our ECM classes all come with a CD and songbook. The CD tracks can be downloaded onto your computer for digital use. Please listen to your music throughout the week, even if it's in the background. Occasionally, small assignments might be sent home such as "Bring a leaf to class next week," but no substantial homework is required.

What should I practice?
Each student is sent home with a written list of practice expectations for the week. When in doubt, practice slow sections rather than rushing through the whole piece. Other common practice techniques include practicing hands alone and counting aloud while playing. Students work closely with their teacher to create a list that fits their pace and lifestyle.
What will I learn?
Students learn engaging songs by sight and by ear. At an age-appropriate level, students learn sight-reading and how to read music. Healthy technique is studied from day one. Through private lessons and group classes, each student receives a holistic education in rhythm, pitch, movement, ensemble, repertoire, and performance.
Will I get to play with others?
Absolutely! Our group piano classes bring everyone together once a month for the chance to make music together. Some of these classes will include dedicated time for duets or trios. Students with a special interest in playing piano with others can also perform these ensembles in recitals.
How will I know that I'm making progress?
Sometimes it's hard to see progress at the piano because skills build so incrementally over time. An easy way to see the progress you've made is to look back at the pieces you studied in the past. Try sight-reading through a piece from last year, and suddenly you realize it's way easier than you remember! Ms. Laurel writes the date you started on each piece for reference as you advance.
